Art at Stockton Heath Primary School

Hannah Bird

Subject Leader: Miss Bird

At Stockton Heath Primary School, Art encourages children to learn creatively to express and regulate their wellbeing and develop artistic ability. We encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to create and practise art forms and processes within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and design technology. The children are also given opportunities to reflect upon and evaluate past and present art processes alongside familiar or new artists, its uses and its effectiveness and are encouraged to become innovators and risk-takers. Children will be exposed to a wide range of skills such as drawing, painting, collage and mixed media processes; through this, they will develop their skills, vocabulary, wellbeing and resilience.

After the disruption and uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic, SHPS experienced a shift in how our children regulate their emotions and motivate themselves to learn. We hope that our Art curriculum can support children to practise mindfulness whilst learning new skills and specific knowledge through a holistic approach.
